Fall soups and slow cooker: a batch cheaper than ready meals

Cold weather hits: ready-meal aisles swell. A Sunday pot often costs less—if you start from deals and a portion plan.

The real cost of ready-to-eat

Single soup cups, fresh bowls, kits: divide by serving. $4–7 a bowl adds up over five nights.

An 8-serving pot at $12–18 of ingredients changes the math—even with 45 minutes of prep.

Base = this week’s deals

Slightly tired veg, lentils, chicken on sale, homemade or cube stock: the flyer sets the soup, not Pinterest.

On SimpleICI, lock 2 veg + 1 protein/legume before picking the “recipe”.

Slow cooker vs stovetop

Slow cooker: useful if you’re away. Pot on the stove: faster at night. Power cost is tiny vs ready meals.

Don’t multiply gadgets. One Dutch oven covers 80% of batches.

Portion immediately

Once lukewarm: boxes for 3–4 nights + 2–3 freezer portions. Otherwise the pot becomes fridge waste.

Label (contents + date). Reheat with a splash of water or milk to stretch.

What not to buy

Brand croutons, single-serve creamers, “Instagram” toppings. Stale bread + oil + salt = croutons.

Keep a basic herb/spice budget; the rest is optional.

Deals → pot → portions. SimpleICI feeds the list; soup beats ready bowls over the month, not just one night.
